  1. Make sure your passport is valid!!!
  2. Go to your local travel clinic ASAP and get the shots and meds you will need.  Malaria medicine is required-generic plaquinel (start Friday before arriving and every Friday until 4 weeks after).   Typhoid preventitives are necessary-shot is good for two years and pills are good for 5 years.  Get some Cipro or bring some Pepto Bismol also (just in case you are not careful).  Imodium is also suggested.
  3. We may order Rotary t-shirts and hats (they cost extra).  Wear them on your flight down and flight back.
  4. Please send your non-refundable check and application for $600 (Casa Maria and Casa Pierre-11 people maximum) or $800 (Utz Tzaba-12 people maximum if there are two groups at same time) per person double occupancy made out to Rotary Club of Superior #40. NO LATER THAN JANUARY 05, 2018:

This money will cover in-country lodging, meals (water or coffee with meals), transportation, alcoholic beverages are extra.  Price differences are due to Casa Maria y Pierre gave us a great rate. At Casa Maria Y Pierre we will take turns cooking breakfast, have group lunch at CCCG center, and have supper out somewhere fun (supper is based on $12 per person per day and wine or drinks at supper are on your own). The same is true for Utz Tzaba for meals, except one of the 5 free prepared breakfasts from the menu, is included.  Utz Tzaba is about 20 minutes from work sites.  Casa Maria Y Pierre is about a 5-minute walk or ride from sites.

  1. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO MAKE YOUR OWN FLIGHT RESERVATIONS.  Email Warren with Flight number and arrival time.
  2. Guatemala has the same electrical power as the USA so converters are not needed.
  3. Bug spray with Permethin is recommended.  Sawyer is a good brand.
  4. We will each bring back 20 lbs. of coffee in bags to sell to support our Guatemala projects so plan space in your suitcase.  You are allowed 60 lbs for your checked luggage.  United charges $25-40 for each bag.  Delta allows one bag and not sure about American.
  5. Make sure you leave a copy of your passport and flight itinerary with your emergency contact.
  6. If you wear glasses it is recommended to bring an old pair to wear on the work site.  It will be hot, sweaty, and dusty…contacts may not be the best.
  7. Leave jewelry (including rings) and expensive watches at home.
  8. We will exchange money in Guatemala City. There are ATMs.
WHAT ELSE TO PACK: (Pack light.  You will be much happier.)
  1. Work clothes for 90 degrees and 90% humidity.
  2. Work hat with wide brim-skin cancer is no fun, gloves, bandanna, sunscreen, sunglasses, work shoes, swimsuit and flipflops for the pool.  You might want to buy those clothes at the Salvation Army Thrift store, and leave them behind.  Many of my clothes will find a new home in La Curvina area.  One nice outfit for a dinner with Club Rotario Vista Hermosa Rotarians or a couple nice outfits for District 4250 conference.  I will send itemized conference expenses when I receive them.
