The importance of all types of Literacy is very apparent in today’s world.  Beginning with young children Early Childhood Literacy is critical.  Years ago the Storytime programs were fairly basic: instill in the children a love of books, reading and sounds in stories.  Now Storytime programs are evolving to include math skills, recognition of shapes and spaces, vocabulary words, etc. while still being a time during which children learn to love books and reading.

Today as Librarians and Early Childhood teachers plan programs, there is a wide variety of age-appropriate books which involve mathematical themes, shapes and sizes, alphabetical knowledge and other Literacy building skills.  These programs are often followed by a craft project which further illustrates the concepts presented in the stories shared.

There are several things Rotarians can do to learn more about Early Childhood Literacy.  From a Google search of “Early Literacy” a number of examples of various Programs around the country can be found.  Also, check with your local Children's Librarian who I’m sure would be glad to share through a Club Program what is taking place in your Community.
