We talked about branding a few months ago, but let’s dive in a little deeper this time.

So, first, a quick quiz: What do the Nike swoosh, the Apple icon and the Mercedes circle have in common?

PLEASE REMOVE LOGOS ON ONE PAGE

You recognize them almost instantly. And no, the answer is not “They would all look good on a Rotary T-shirt.” The real answer is branding. Branding is how an organization becomes recognizable, memorable, and hopefully something people actually want to be a part of. And when it comes to Rotary, branding is a whole lot more than stamping the wheel onto a stray piece of merch and calling it a day.

What Exactly IS the Rotary Brand?

The Rotary brand is the story people associate with us. It’s what they think and feel when they hear the word Rotary. Do they think of People of Action, community service, friendship, leadership and making a difference? Or do they just picture a bunch of folks who meet for lunch on Tuesdays? Hopefully, it leans heavily toward the first five. And the things we do help us build on that brand.

Every single interaction helps shape our reputation. Whether it's a social media post, a website refresh, a local newspaper story, a service project, a community event, a branded shirt or yes, even another photo of club members standing in a straight row holding shovels, we are building the Rotary brand in real time.

Your Club Already Has a Brand

Here is something worth thinking about: your club already has a brand, whether you intentionally crafted it or not. People in your community have an impression of you. Maybe you are known as the powerhouse that gets things done, the champions of local education, the creators of an amazing annual event or the reliable crew that always shows up when the neighborhood needs help.

Or maybe you’re known as: “Oh yeah, Rotary. My dad used to belong to that.”

If that last one sounds familiar, don't panic. That’s not a branding failure; that’s a premier branding opportunity.

Branding Is About More Than Looking Good

Good branding isn't simply about making your Facebook page look pretty, although, let's be honest, high-resolution photos definitely help. At its core, branding is about creating a consistent identity so people recognize us, understand us, and remember us.

Think of it this way:

· Your logo gets attention.

· Your message creates understanding.

· Your stories create connection.

· Your actions create trust.

That is the Rotary brand at work.

I hope to see you at the District Conference!
