Ralph Waldo Emerson stated “Peace cannot be achieved through violence; it can only be attained through understanding.” Rotarians live this creed by example, even in the worst of times. Writing in The Rotarian in February 1940, Paul Harris eloquently stated the cause:
This is a critical year. It is not easy to be optimists while storm clouds obscure the sky. Rotarians are especially sensitive to international disturbances because ties of friendship bind us together, ties which cannot be dissolved by governmental fiat.
Civilized nations are at war and we who are living in peace sympathize with those who are less fortunate. We know that untold numbers of sleepless fathers and mothers toss about on rumpled sheets and tear-drenched pillows and pray for dawn. How slowly move the hands of the clock, how weary the waiting for the break of day!
Barry Rassin, Rotary International President 2018-19
In my travels over the past year, I've visited many strong, vibrant clubs and districts that are transforming their communities. When I attend their meetings, I can feel the energy. When I meet their members, I can see they are people of action. And when I look at their communities, I can recognize the impact of their work.

Quoting The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, “Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink.” We Rotarians in District 5580 generally have plenty of fresh water resources available in most of our District, including ten percent of the world’s fresh water resources contained in Lake Superior. Not true in the rest of the world where the availability of fresh water resources is a critical element in the daily routine.
The 4 Way Essay Contest is complete and we have a winner! The panel of four judges from throughout our district read and ranked each of the 15 essays submitted by clubs across the district.
