This SITE page is designed to provide Rotary Clubs in District 5580 with the chance to review active or upcoming projects and to evaluate opportunities for potentially participating in the projects financially or as volunteer workers.  This could be especially helpful to smaller clubs who may not be able to do a large project on its own, but by "partnering," a project could be funded, staffed, and successfully completed.

SAN ANTONIO LA COMMUNIDAD GUATEMALA DRINKING WATER PROJECT

FUNDING APPEAL FOR GLOBAL GRANT 2697362 

The people of San Antonio La Communidad in Guatemala reached out to Rotary and requested assistance with building a potable water system to serve over 250 homes and their population of 1,300 Maya people. Most of the residents are farmers, growing crops for their own consumption. A day’s work pays Q125.00 ($17) when available. The community has a meeting hall and a primary school. At an elevation of 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) above sea level, the area is arid and mountainous with rocky terrain.

The lack of ample, clean water results in constant hardship for its inhabitants, affecting both their quality of life and economy. Traveling to the nearest river for water takes 40 minutes. Families harvest rainwater when available and are also forced to purchase bottled water at high cost. The scarcity of water affects the health and hygiene of the entire community, with children and the elderly being the most vulnerable. Safe, clean water will be a life-changing event for these hard-working people.

In April 2026, a team including the Rotary Clubs of Vista Hermosa GT, Elmbrook, Satellite Club e-Sin Fronteras, Milwaukee, as well as ISF-GT (Engineers Without Borders) conducted a community needs assessment with over 40 enthusiastic residents. Included were the community President, the Community Development Council, schoolteachers, the water committee and other residents. Following this meeting, a plan was developed.

This $273,000 project will require a Rotary contribution of $218,000.

SAN RAFAEL CHICHOP GUATEMALA DRINKING WATER PROJECT

FUNDING APPEAL FOR GLOBAL GRANT 2696457
 

San Rafael Chichop, a community of 1,500 residents located in the Highlands of Guatemala north of Joyabaj, has asked Rotary to assist in constructing a water system. Current immigration policies of the US have meant the return of many Guatemalans to the area with fifteen new homes being added to the 245 existing. Many families now use seasonal rainwater collection, purchase water every one or two weeks at a cost of Q50 per barrel or pay for a 40-minute vehicle trip to collect water from a spring in the valley. Change in climate patterns has resulted in shorter rainy seasons and highly variable crop yields.

San Rafael Chichop was originally part of a large farm owned by a Spanish landowner. Locals could legally purchase property beginning in the 1960’s and since then, the community has been able to establish their own schools. Most of the population speak Maya K’iche’, approximately 75% of the population is literate and there are high school and university graduates. The community has one catholic and two evangelical churches, schools, and a multipurpose hall.

Rotary members from the in-country Vista Hermosa Rotary Club, Milwaukee, Elmbrook, the ERC Satellite Rotary Clubs, and staff from Ingenieros sin Fronteras-GT visited the community in April 2026. They conducted interviews of the community President, the COCODE (Council), and eight representatives of the community. The community’s objective is to guarantee equitable access to water resources so that all homes, schools, churches, businesses and the public market will have access to clean water. However, they lack sufficient financial resources to deliver the project. 

 The $323,000 project will require a Rotary contribution of $189,000.
