Samuel Owori Memorial WASH Project Rotarians around the world are donating to the "Access to WASH in Tororo" project as a tribute to the work and life of the late Samuel Owori, Rotary International President Elect. Samuel was very committed to bringing clean water and sanitation to the people of Uganda. Three Ugandan clubs, including the Rotary Club of Kampala, Sam's home club, are the host clubs of this project. The Rotary Foundation has approved a global grant that will provide an entire region of Eastern Uganda with a significant improvement in health and education. The WASRAG Board has approved a $10,000 contribution to this project. Individuals have up to Feb 20, 2018, to make their own donation. WASRAG World Water Day Competition What has your club done to build awareness in your community of Water and Sanitation issues? WASRAG will be awarding two prizes of $500 to projects that improve the quality of water and/or level of awareness in their community. One prize will be for the Best Project that has most impact, and the other prize will be for the Most Innovative Project. A brief description of the project needs to be submitted to info@wasrag.org by May 1st, 2018. Include in your description what you are doing, the target audience and the impact of the project. Remember to include your Club and District name and contact information. |
WASH in Schools (WinS) Wins BIG ! The Rotary Foundation has awarded $425,000 to a joint project of the Rotary Clubs of Guatemala Sur, Antigua, and Barrington Breakfast for a significant Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools (WinS) project in Guatemala, involving 48 schools and 20,000 children. Rotary clubs within the countries of Belize, Guatemala, India, Kenya and Honduras were eligible to submit WinS projects. Of the 46 clubs that submitted projects, four clubs were awarded grants. Each of the grants integrated Water and Sanitation with Literacy. Rotary International has issued a global challenge to improve education, particularly among young girls, by improving WASH services, teacher training and curriculum enhancement. |
Clean Water for Costa Rica With a Global Grant of $98,000 from The Rotary Foundation the Rotary Clubs of San Jose Noreste and Cartago, Costa Rica and Winter Park, Florida have improved the health of over 600 people in two communities, by installing community water systems for over 140 households in Costa Rica. The community has already noticed considerable improvement in the health of all residents, student enrollment has increased and local agriculture has flourished. A great example of a sustainable clean water project! |
Lack of Water is the Problem In rural areas, the lack of water for drinking and agriculture is one of the major reasons for poverty, poor health and the large scale migration of people to urban areas. The Rotary Club of Pune Pashan, in India, is actively working on a project to provide much needed water to the rural area of the Pune District. After a local needs assessment, they realized the best way to make a difference was to remove 50 years of silt from an existing reservoir. WWS 10 - WASH and Health - June 22, 2018 Learn what Rotarians can do to help the thousands of hospitals and health care facilities that lack safe water and sanitation. President Elect Barry Rassin, a Hospital Administrator himself, will share how Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects impact the health of millions of people. The full day program, that precedes the Rotary International Conference, will include round table discussions on current topics, panel discussions and break-out sessions. Household Water Filters - Biosand and more Biosand filters are an effective and sustainable solution to providing safe drinking water to households. April 19-22, 2018 the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technologies (CAWST) is providing an intense workshop where participants will obtain the necessary skills to choose the appropriate filter technology and how to implement a successful biosand filter project. The workshop is being held at the Colombiere Conference Center, Clarkson, MI. The workshop has limited space and will fill-up quickly. The cost includes accommodation at the retreat center, meals, training and resource materials. CAWST has developed a reputation for providing excellent hands-on workshops. You will find the program well organized with excellent trainers. |
