Recently, I spent time in the Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda. As the "settlement" in its name suggests, the people living there are free to move around and integrate as best they can — one thing that makes the place unique.  I had a chance to play soccer with boys and girls from about a dozen nations and talk with women who had fled areas of conflict. It was a tapestry of human experience shared through both laughter and tears.

ROTARY'S ANNIVERSARY!
February 23rd is Rotary's anniversary!
 
World Understanding and Peace Day takes place on February 23 every year.  This day is actually a commemoration of the first meeting of Rotary that was held.  This meeting of businessmen, which aimed to be a space where their backgrounds didn’t matter, started the chain of events that led to the formation of Rotary International.  An international organization dedicated to humanitarian service as well as peace and goodwill throughout the world, Rotary International began in Chicago, U.S.  Follow this link to read more: https://nationaltoday.com/world-understanding-and-peace-day/

February Eco Challenge: Learn about Road Salt Pollution and Help to Reduce It
It’s definitely winter here in the Northland!  Have you needed to use salt on your driveway?  According to this article from the US Environmental Protection Agency, road salt can contaminate drinking water, kill or endanger wildlife, increase soil erosion and damage private and public property. But best practices and alternatives exist!

ESSAY CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED!

The Four Way Test Essay Contest is complete and we have a winner!  The panel of judges from throughout our district read and ranked each of the essays submitted by clubs across the district.   

This year’s Overall District Winner was David Harris, sponsored by the Port Arthur Rotary Club.  You can watch for his printed essay in an upcoming edition of “Cross Currents.  A huge THANK YOU to all of the youth and clubs that participated and the judges who read and ranked all of the essays.  Congratulations to DAVID HARRIS!!

Rotary International’s Council on Legislation

The Rotary International Council on Legislation (RiCL, or COL) is a legislative body responsible for determining the policies and procedures of Rotary International. The council meets every three years to review and vote on proposed changes to the Rotary Constitution and Bylaws. 

The first RICL was held in 1910, and since then it has played a crucial role in shaping the direction and future of the organization.
