March 2025

March is here, and for Rotary International, that means celebrating Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Month — a time to shine a spotlight on one of the most transformative areas of our work.

This month is an opportunity to reflect on The Magic of Rotary and the profound impact we create when we come together with determination and purpose.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR MESSAGE
District Governor:

Happy Spring Greetings!

In most of District 5580, we are experiencing spring-like weather. What a joy it is to see snow melting or completely disappearing. The weather makes us think of spring, which is also the time to plan our upcoming new Rotary year.

I was with other District 5580 Rotarians in Minneapolis this past weekend for NCPETS training. NCPETS stands for North Central President-Elect Training. NCPETS gives our members time to share ideas, develop friendships, and learn from each other. We partner with two other Districts to train our incoming President–elects for the upcoming year. No two districts are exactly alike. Thank you to those Presidents who attended!

MARCH ECO CHALLENGE

Submitted by Star Gump, Twin Ports Rotaract- President

March ECO Challenge - Reduce use of single use plastics

Single use plastics, cans, and other one time use containers are used in our communities every single day. Last semester at UMD, I did a challenge for my sustainability class where we eliminated single serve beverages for a whole week. The Eco Challenge for this month is based on that idea. I challenge you to spend a day, a few days, or even a week eliminating single serve beverages and to see how many single serve beverages you consume over that period of time usually. By having this knowledge of how many containers we each use, we can see a better view of our climate impact.

What I found when doing this challenge is a new perspective on how many single serve containers/beverages we use in our daily lives. When we zoom out, these single serve containers are affecting our world and our climate by how they are produced and disposed of.
