The World Health Organization designates 10 October as World Mental Health Day, and with Rotary placing a special focus on mental health this year, I would like to help answer the question posed to me most often when I travel to meet members: How can my club get started?

On October 26, the Wilder Foundation is conducting its statewide Homeless Study. The study occurs every 3 years. More than 1,000 volunteers at over 400 locations statewide will interview Minnesotans experiencing homelessness on that day, gathering information about their experiences that will be used by policymakers and researchers to better understand the causes and conditions of homelessness and propose solutions that will further accessible, affordable housing options. In the spirit of the Four-way Test, the study will search for the truth about homelessness in a way that will be fair to all concerned; it will provide an opportunity to build goodwill and better friendships with Wilder, its study partners, other volunteers, and the people experiencing homelessness; and the results of the study will be beneficial to all concerned. ‘Tis the season to crank up the heat! Have you examined your furnace lately? How about sealed your home against the elements? Now’s a great time to look for leaks and to work to improve the efficiency of your home’s systems. This can save significant energy and money, as well as provide a satisfying way to spend part of a lovely fall weekend before winter arrives. There are many easy tasks you can do yourself – or take advantage of the opportunities available through your utility or municipality. Check out the links below for more ideas and information. All new members inducted into District 5580 Clubs from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024 are eligible to receive a new member gift of a Rotary shirt shown in the graphic.
To receive the shirt the Club President or Secretary needs to email Mark Leutgeb, District membership Chair, at mvleutgeb@gmail.com with the name and brief bio of the new member, male or female shirt size, and mailing address. Shirts will not shrink. The shirt will be shipped and the new member will be announced in the District newsletter.
We hope that our new Rotary District 5580 members will wear their shirts proudly throughout their communities sharing the news about the good work that Rotarians do.

In the early days of Rotary in what is now District 5580, many clubs chose to have Extension Committees. These committees sought to bring Rotary clubs to new cities. The clubs in Everett, and Cloquet Minnesota were developed by members of the extension committee of the Rotary Club of Duluth, and Norman Black, a member of the Fargo Club, President of that club and then District Governor-of what was then D9 of in 192-23, was extremely active in Extension. He is said to have been responsible for the formation of many of the clubs in the northwest of what is now our District from just after WW 1 to the late 1920’s.

The number one thing most clubs want to know is what is happening around the District, but we can't help spread the word if we don't know what your club is up to.

We have chosen the theme "All is Possible with Hope" and will have Dick Beardsley as our keynote speaker. Dick is an accomplished long distance runner, best selling author and world class speaker. District 5580 will be giving us an update on the Foundation. Displays from the Twin Ports Clubs will showcase the incredible projects we all have been working on.
The first woman admitted to the Dickinson Rotary Club died on Saturday, September 30, 2024.
Muriel Dassinger, 97, served as Club Secretary Treasurer from 1987, when she joined Rotary, until 2006 and was a Paul Harris +2. For the past several years, Muriel was an honorary member of the Dickinson Rotary Club. A fiercely independent and strong woman, Muriel strived to live by the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self."
