SEPTEMBER IS BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY MONTH

Here in the United States, another summer is winding down. And for the Maloney family, every summer ends with a return to my hometown of Ridgway, Illinois, for the annual Popcorn Day festival, where I am honored to serve as the “Popcorn King,” the master of ceremonies for the day’s events.

Greetings everyone. September is here and summer is coming to an end. As Susan and I travel across the district the colors are getting brighter and day light is getting shorter. September is also one of my favorite Rotary months.

2019 DISTRICT 5580 RYLA RECAP

Thank you. Thank you to all District 5580 Rotarians for your continued support of our Camp RYLA. I truly believe we have one of the best RYLA programs around and this year 122 students got to experience it for themselves thanks to your continued support. The 28^th annual District 5580 RYLA was held in Crookston, MN July 14-20.

There are two options available for contributions to the relief fund:

Funds to aid The Bahamas specifically may be send directly to the Bahamas Disaster Fund.
Donations to assist with recovery efforts in all territories affected may be donated through DAF #574 at Rotary International

DISTRICT 5580 FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE COMMITTEE LOOKING FOR NEW DESTINATIONS

The District 5580 Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) committee met on August 21^st and will meet again in September, but in the meantime we would like our D5580 Rotarians to provide suggestions as to our next destination. Remember the destinations can be worldwide including Canada and the USA and it is open to D5580 Rotarians and their significant others.

September is Literacy Month!

Very few of us give much if any thought about Financial Literacy as we go about our daily lives. Can you even remember when young being aware of money and what it could do for you? Maybe it was just the Tooth Fairy's reward or that dollar bill in a Birthday card. Yet, as adults in today's world Financial Literacy is crucial in so many ways for a successful life.

4-WAY TEST ESSAY CONTEST

The annual District 5580 4-Way Test Essay Contest is now underway. The contest is open to students who are in their final 2 years of high school. Its purpose is to help your club educate youth concerning the Rotary 4-Way Test and how they can apply it to their lives.

NOMINATIONS FOR DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2022-2023: DUE OCTOBER 4

District 5580 is now calling for nominations for the office of District Governor for the Rotary year 2022-2023, and qualified Rotarians may submit a nomination for consideration by the District Nominating Committee. The Nominee must submit the following documents:

1. Governor-Nominee Data Form;

2. Curriculum Vitae to accompany Governor-Nominee Data Form;

3. Resolution adopted by Nominee’s Rotary Club;

4. Consent to Background Check by Nominee; and

5. Photo of Nominee (head and shoulders) in .jpeg format, if emailed.

2020 DISTRICT CONFERENCE SPONSORSHIP: DEADLINE OCTOBER 30

The 2020 District Conference committee is planning an exciting mix of education, service above self, and fun! Historic Madden's resort on beautiful Gull Lake in Brainerd, Minnesota will be our hosts for the conference and opportunities for fellowship and fun are being planned for the whole family with a variety of events including a golf tournament, "family fun night" with games and activities, glow golf opportunity, cigar rolling class, wine and whiskey tasting, guided painting event, and all the amenities the resort has to offer.
