PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE
Shekhar Mehta

Jennifer Jones

President 2022-23

(Presidential message retrieved from: https://my.rotary.org/en/news-media/office-president/presidential-message)

Recently, Nick and I spent time in Guatemala, where we met wonderful fellow Rotary members and families who unofficially adopted me as “Tía Jennifer.” On the third day, after visiting Patzún in the mountainous western highlands, we set out for Lake Atitlán, which we needed to reach by nightfall. If we took a back road we could get there faster. Locals told us it had just been repaved and assured us, “You’ll have no problem.”

POLIO UPDATE

Rotary statement on recent polio detections in U.S., Europe

The recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in New York, USA, and isolates in several environmental samples collected in London are stark reminders that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere. It also highlights the importance of vaccination as the only form of protection against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases and the work that needs to be done in our communities to encourage the uptake of vaccines. Also, as the world gets closer to zero wild poliovirus cases, it is increasingly important to track all forms of the virus wherever they may appear, including in polio-free regions.

ROTARY HISTORY

Rotary Club of Duluth builds and then rebuilds a medical clinic in Las Palmeros, Department of Loreto , Peru

In 1992, the Rotary Club of Duluth, the 25th club chartered by Rotary International, helped to construct a medical clinic at Las Palmeros, in the northern Department of Loreto, Peru. The needs of the people of the Amazon region were brought to the attention of the Club by Dr. Linnea Smith, a Wisconsin physician who had given up her practice in the US to help the people of the Amazon river. The original construction in the early ‘90’s, gave access to free medical care for thousands of people in the Amazon, and a clinic for Dr. Smith, nurses and Physicians assistants to work from. Dr. smith established a not for profit called the Amazon Medical Project to provide medicines, equipment, and medical personnel to La Clínica Yanamonos, which was at the time the only free medical facility in the Department.

People of Action: Rotary and “The Outlaw Bridge”

We all know that nations are often slow to act when they need to collaborate on projects that involve them with other nations. By 1916 two roads converged on the Pigeon River at the border of Canada and the United States. Cook county had carved out a road leading to the border to help grow the timber industry there, and in 1913 the Province of Ontario had begun improving a lumber road that had been built for William Scott’s Pigeon River Lumber Company.

Wahpeton- Breckenridge’s Double Decker Bus: Rotary doubles its impact in the Community

Many visitors have noted and commented on the Rotary double decker bus in the Wahpeton -Breckinridge area, but few know its story.
