Rotary 101 Factoid #3: How is Rotary structured and organized?
Rotary is made up of Rotary Clubs, Rotary International, and The Rotary Foundation (commonly referred to as TRF).
We all know about Rotary Clubs, each of us is a member of one.
Rotary International is the global service organization under which our clubs are chartered.
In addition to Rotary International, we have our charitable arm, called The Rotary Foundation (commonly referred to as TRF), which is run by the Trustees, who are all Rotary members.
Public health is on everyone’s mind due to the global pandemic that still threatens the safety of ourselves and our loved ones. In a sense, COVID-19 has made all of us much more aware of the roles and responsibilities of medical professionals than we were before we had to wear masks and maintain social distance. In addition, while moving through this pandemic, we have also learned about the role we can play in keeping others safe.
December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month in Rotary. The pandemic unfortunately has schooled most people on the toll that disease takes on our communities. But fighting disease is something that Rotarians around the world have been doing for decades. In fact, it is one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus.
On December 2nd, Lynne and I attended Jamestown Rotary’s Centennial Celebration along with DGN Dave Long and DGND Kay Parries (photos can be seen under Club News). It was a great event with not only club members, but the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce members as well! Our District 5580 has 13 of its 62 Rotary Clubs celebrating 100-year celebrations between 2020 and 2022. Wouldn’t it be great if we could grow Rotary again like we did a century ago?
The planning for our April 21-23 Tri-Con District Conference is for the most part, complete. Our planning committee is made up of nearly 80 Rotarians representing D5580, D5950 & D5960.

This month’s (Dec) Rotary theme is Disease Prevention and Treatment. Rotary clubs in our District 5580 have helped provide many opportunities to control and treat diseases in various parts of the world. Matching grants received through The Rotary Foundation have made it possible for Rotary clubs to have a significant impact on disease prevention and treatment in the areas of need. Funds for these matching grants come from YOU through your generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation. Your contributions make you a participant in these humanitarian projects even if you cannot participate there in person. Please consider participating in the humanitarian projects by Rotary clubs around the world by giving some of your financial resources to The Rotary Foundation. Multiple ways of giving are available. For more information please feel free to call me or send me a note. As always, I or a member of our district’s Foundation team are available to give your club a presentation on various aspects of the Rotary Foundation.
Last week, in addition to the devastation in Kentucky, a total of 15 tornados devastated towns in Middle and Western Tennessee as storms swept through the state. Winds of up to 135 miles per hour ripped up communities and tore up the lives of those who survived. Small towns such as Dresden, Dickson, Kingston Springs and Samburg in our own District 6760 have lost homes, entire business districts and neighborhoods, and destroyed livelihoods, with many people in need of basics such as a place to sleep and shelter, non-perishable food, gas cans and storage bins, as well as cleanup equipment. This article covering a visit to the area by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee includes photos of some of the hardest-hit communities in West Tennessee.
Rotary District Governor in 6760, Michael Babb, district leadership, and Rotary clubs in the devastated communities are organized to accept donations and contribute to helping these communities survive, recover and rebuild.
At this very special time of year, those who survive have little to celebrate. Please help. Here’s what is currently known, and what you can do.

Registration for MUNA 2022 is now open. We also hope that your club might consider supporting the registration of one or more delegations. We’ve been hosting the Winnipeg MUNA almost continuously since 1957. MUNA 2022 will take place on April 28 & 29, and with Covid-19 restrictions still in effect, we will once again host the event virtually via Zoom.
MUNA participants have come from schools in Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, B.C., North Dakota, and Minnesota. Through the Rotary MUNA event, young people create and debate resolutions on topics ranging from world peace and security to social and environmental issues, all in a realistic simulation of the United Nations General Assembly. The negotiation and consensus-building skills practiced at MUNA are a great asset whatever career pursued.

Dickinson, North Dakota Rotary Club
Spurred by a $1,000 match by Rotarian Ken Nelson, the Dickinson Rotary Club's pie auction raised a total of $4,805 in just under 25 minutes, thanks to auctioneer Larry Schnell and the generosity of club members. Rotarians donated 18 pies, cakes and truffles for the effort that will go toward the club’s budgeted donation to PolioPlus.
