Firehouse Pub contributed $1 for every drink sold and we also collected cash donations. We raised $520 (before the Bill & Melinda Gates donation.) We had a great crowd and gave out door prizes every 15 minutes. We had a sponsored taco bar and good participation from Rotarians. Your club could win a vest for each member, plus an additional 10% for those new members that will join after seeing you working in those vests. The vests are sized to your members (be sure to allow room for sweaters and coats!) and your club logo will be on the vests. November 2024One of Rotary’s greatest strengths is the ability of our members to come together to create lasting change, and The Rotary Foundation helps us transform dreams of change into reality. From eradicating polio to building peace, much of the work we do around the world would not be possible without our continued support of our Foundation. The cause of peace is especially important to me, and one of the most effective ways we build peace is our Rotary Peace Fellowship — a product of The Rotary Foundation. The program helps current and aspiring peace and development professionals around the world learn how to prevent and how to end conflict.

Submitted by: Bradford Folta I am two years into my Rotary career and have enjoyed all the thrills Rotary offers. I currently serve as the Club Service Officer for the Brainerd Noon Rotary Club. I am excited to be the new RYE Public Image Officer for District 5580. I grew up in Brainerd and was never aware of the opportunity to be an exchange student through Rotary. After I joined my club and attended the district shin-digs for RYE, I became motivated to promote the program because of my missed opportunity and to show that there were new and exciting things beyond our district for our youth to experience. My goal with the RYE team is to expand RYE to more clubs within our district, increase our outbounds/inbounds, and create a locally-international world from which we can learn and enjoy making the great white north much more fun!

Submitted by: Kay Parries We started our Club visits on July 8th! Since that time we have visited 21 Clubs in Minnesota and North Dakota covering almost 3000 miles. Each club has projects, fundraisers and programs unique to their communities. Some share many of the same projects that most of you do, such as raffle books, scholarships, peach sales and rose sales. I’ve been collecting a list to share with you as we continue our journey across District 5580.
Rotary is a life journey! There are times where we don’t know where that journey will take us. But, what I do know is that journey will benefit many people and yourself. I can’t be more proud of District 5580 for the wonderful clubs and all of you who do wonderful things in your communities!

A new club role, more support for Rotary’s young leaders Rotary and Rotaract clubs can now designate a Programs for Young Leaders contact. And Interact club presidents can (with a parent’s consent) complete an optional self-registration form to receive resources and support directly from Rotary International. Both of these changes will help clubs and youth programs expand and grow stronger in part by enabling RI to distribute tools and information to club contacts. The Programs for Young Leaders contacts will stay connected with all of the youth programs their club sponsors, amplifying participants’ ideas and input and advocating for safe, inclusive programs. They will also serve as the main contact for any Interact clubs their club sponsors, attend Interact meetings, and find opportunities for Interactors to attend the sponsor club’s meetings and activities. What is a pollinator garden and why is it important? A garden that features flowers that bloom throughout the summer and provide food to pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other species. Sadly pollinator population size and diversity is on the decline in North America due to habitat loss, invasive species, pesticides and disease. Conserving pollinators is critical — and you can help! Plant your seeds or native flowering plants in your yard or balcony, take a photo by August 31 and submit to envirocomm5580@gmail.com. The first of these, “One Profits Most Who Serves the Best”, was the earliest motto and dates from 1910, when Art Sheldon of the Rotary Club of Chicago, Club No 1, said in a speech “He Profits Most who Serves his Fellows Best.” At the second Association of Rotary Club’s Convention in Portland, Oregon, in1910, the motto “He Profits Most Who Serves the Best” was adopted as the official motto of the organization.

Submitted by: District Environmental Committee Hey, District 5580 - let’s take collective action for the planet in 2024! Your district Environment Committee is here to help. Our mission: To advocate for environmental sustainability in our district by providing resources, tools, and inspiration to help our district's clubs thrive in a way consistent with Rotary International's focus area of the environment. Now a year and a half old, we’ve been working behind the scenes to bring you tips and ideas on how to live more gently on the planet. For the rest of this Rotary year we’re also looking forward to hearing from clubs who complete an environmentally-related project and would like to be reimbursed $100 for their efforts! Buy some tools, purchase materials, match a grant, treat your volunteers to pizza – anything goes as long as your project is focused on making a positive environmental impact. All you need to do is send a quick email to us at envirocomm5580@gmail.com telling us what you did, how many people participated, and how you spent your $100. We’d love to see photos or a video, too! DG Dave Long’s goal is for every club to do something in honor of the newest Rotary Area of Focus. Need ideas? Check out our new tab on the district 5580 website (under “Club Support”): https://rotary5580.org/sitepage/protecting-the-environment. You’ll find a simple project report form and a handful of project templates posted. We’ll continue to add more, plus links to other resources such as speaker ideas, EcoChallenges and the latest from ESRAG (the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group). Let us know what other resources would help spur your club into taking action.

Submitted by: Jim Herrington, District Learning Facilitator Unlocking Professional Growth with Rotary's Learning Center In my previous professional experience, I had the privilege of benefiting from a dedicated individual who provided personalized career insights and professional development plans. While this support was invaluable, I realized that sustained growth required proactive measures on my part. Choosing a cost-effective approach, I turned to readily available resources like audiobooks and podcasts, many of which are accessible through public libraries. Although these tools were beneficial, I craved a more structured and customizable learning experience. Enter Rotary International, a game-changer in the realm of professional development. Through the Learning Center on My.Rotary.org, Rotarians gain access to a comprehensive library of courses, with a dedicated section on Professional Development. Whether it's honing your speechwriting or perfecting your delivery skills for an upcoming business event, the Learning Center has you covered. From conflict management to communication skills, the Professional Development section offers a diverse array of courses tailored to your needs. What sets this apart? It's all included with your Rotary membership. Don't miss out on the opportunity to maximize your Rotary experience. Sign in to My.Rotary.org today and embark on the journey to becoming the best version of yourself.

Submitted by Karin Cianco, Rotary Club of St. Paul On October 26, the Wilder Foundation is conducting its statewide Homeless Study. The study occurs every 3 years. More than 1,000 volunteers at over 400 locations statewide will interview Minnesotans experiencing homelessness on that day, gathering information about their experiences that will be used by policymakers and researchers to better understand the causes and conditions of homelessness and propose solutions that will further accessible, affordable housing options. In the spirit of the Four-way Test, the study will search for the truth about homelessness in a way that will be fair to all concerned; it will provide an opportunity to build goodwill and better friendships with Wilder, its study partners, other volunteers, and the people experiencing homelessness; and the results of the study will be beneficial to all concerned. Foundation wrap up - 2022-2023 fiscal year The fiscal year 2022-23 came to a close on June 30, 2023. As I mentioned in previous articles, our Annual Fund giving goal is $100 per capita ($100 average per Rotarian in our district). While we did not achieve our annual fund goal, we had a very successful year closing out the year at approximately $92.42 per capita. That is the 2nd highest per capita contribution in the past 5 years! Considering we were sitting at $67 per capita in May 2023, the Foundation Committee extends a huge THANK YOU to the Rotarians that responded and impacted our Annual Fund giving! In addition, we had a very success year raising funds for the PolioPlus Fund raising $141,522 for the year ending June 30, 2023. That amount is the largest contribution in the past 5 years! Thank you for your support of the PolioPlus Fund.

Submitted By: Jill Baum, The Environment Committee July EcoChallenge from your friendly District Environment Committee: Bring your own to-go container! Did you know that packaging constitutes nearly 30% of municipal solid waste? Food to-go containers make up a significant portion of that trash and tend to be particularly plastic-based, from Styrofoam to liquid containers with lids to bags. Plastics, in turn, affect over 700 species of marine animals… And on it goes, right on down the food chain. What can we do about it? How about something radical like bringing your own containers when you go out to eat! If remembering to bring your own bags to the store is already challenging, this may ramp things up a bit – but challenge yourself to give it a try this month! July 28th is World Nature Conservation Day. Keep those marine animals – and everyone else – in mind the next time you head out to eat. Thanks for being a role model. Bon Appetit!

The award was presented in front of a cheering Lake Park-Audubon student body and faculty in the high school auditorium. Paul Harris Fellowships are named after the founder of Rotary. In Sam’s case, it was given to him in recognition of being an example of the the Rotary Motto, “Service Above Self”. Sam was instrumental in starting “Sam’s Meals For Many”. This program originated as a “Pay-It-Forward” project of his Sunday School Class at Cormorant Lutheran Church. This program has grown from providing an eight-meal Christmas season food package to one family (6 members) to 66 families with 301 members in the most recent Christmas season.

February 23rd is Rotary's anniversary! World Understanding and Peace Day takes place on February 23 every year. This day is actually a commemoration of the first meeting of Rotary that was held. This meeting of businessmen, which aimed to be a space where their backgrounds didn’t matter, started the chain of events that led to the formation of Rotary International. An international organization dedicated to humanitarian service as well as peace and goodwill throughout the world, Rotary International began in Chicago, U.S. Follow this link to read more: https://nationaltoday.com/world-understanding-and-peace-day/

The council meets every three years to review and vote on proposed changes to the Rotary Constitution and Bylaws. The first RICL was held in 1910, and since then it has played a crucial role in shaping the direction and future of the organization.

On Wednesday, Karl Everett (Karlos) received a check from the Dickinson Rotary Club for $1000 to support the Bolivia Dream Fund student scholarships, that Matt Thibodeau initiated and spoke about on Foundation Day. Also, the Dickenson club provided the final donation needed to receive the matching grant from the District for the Viente de Septiembre medical clinic in Bolivia. Once we receive the grant money, we can move forward with Mano a Mano Bolivia to initiate the construction of the project. They plan to start the construction in December and complete the project in four months. They are planning to have the clinic in operation by April 2023. You are all invited to attend the dedication of the clinic, which will be a spectacular event, and visit with the Dream Fund students. We are planning The Great Bolivia Adventure on April 13th to the +/-23rd 2023. Please join us. Contact Karl Everett for more information and to reserve a place on the trip.

(Richard C. “Rick” and Susan Bricker) Past District GovernorRick Bricker Richard C. “Rick” Bricker, Rotary District 5580 Past District Governor (Written by Gregory D. Carlson) Richard C. “Rick” Bricker, Past District Governor for Rotary District 5580 and member of the Brainerd Noon Rotary Club, passed away November 16, 2022, at age 68. Rick’s life exemplified Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self” in every aspect of his life. In addition to his service in the U.S. Army, he also served extensively within his church, community, and in Rotary. With the Brainerd Noon Rotary Club, Rick volunteered in many community and international service projects including the Brainerd Rotary Park, and work in Haiti. Rick served as Rotary District 5580 Governor in 2019-2020, a year that will always be remembered for the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020. Rick was instrumental in beginning a Rotary District 5580 initiative to fight human trafficking and child abuse, along with Rotary Districts 5950 and 5960. Rick was the first of three consecutive District 5580 Governors to passionately embrace this important cause. This partnership would also form the basis for future collaborative work among the adjoining Rotary Districts.

Submitted By: Jill Baum and the Environment Committee Brrrrr - it would appear that winter is upon us. Now's a great time to think about your energy use. Before turning up the thermostat, consider adding a sweater instead. Did you know that if everyone in the US lowered their thermostat by 1 degree F, we could reduce carbon emissions by 7.2 teragrams? That's equivalent to the annual carbon usage of 1.4 million people ( https://atmos.utah.edu/anthro_now/thermostats_101.php). Still not convinced? Check out a few more reasons to consider keeping cool for the planet: https://thriftyhomesteader.com/6-reasons-turn-down-your-thermostat/ Enjoy those lovely winter sweaters this season!

Dickinson Rotarians continue to give the gift of literacy and during the month October the Rotary Club members distributed dictionaries to third grade students in all public and private schools in Dickinson, South Heart and Belfield. It's a tradition spanning more than 15 years, organized by Rotarian Glenice Hansen for most of those years. This year, 480 dictionaries were placed in the hands of students during a two-week period. It's an effort that takes Rotarians into the classroom, where they meet students, hand out dictionaries and point out ways to use a dictionary. Students can use the dictionaries in school and at home, too. The project is one of the club members' favorite activities, Hansen said. It's more than a dictionary, it's one way our Dickinson Rotary Club can help foster a love or learning and spread the gift of literacy.

The Bismarck Rotary Club ran a concession stand at Papa's Pumpkin Patch three weekends in October to raise money for their international project this year. Papa's is THE place to go in the fall in Bismarck with lots of activities (including ziplines, haybale mazes, and a pumpkin catapult!) and, of course, pumpkins for the old and young at heart. (One October weekend set a new attendance record - over 10,000 people!) The club coordinates with local high school students to help fill all the shifts, exposing the next generation to the Service Above Self mentality. Early estimates are that the club will net over $10,000 for their efforts.

Evan Burrell | Keynote Speaker Evan is a 36r year old Rotarian and member of the Rotary Club of Turramurra in D9685 in Sydney, Australia. Evan has been an active part of the Rotary family for nearly 20 years, serving many of those years as a dedicated Rotaractor. Evan certainty gets around, at the 2014 Rotary convention in Sydney; you may have seen him walking around taking hundreds of “Service Above Selfies” with convention attendees. Or you may have run into him immunizing children against polio in India, or worked alongside him across the district. Evan was even known for teaching the 2013-14 RI President Ron Burton how to dance to Korean singer Psy’s “Gangnam Style” a few years back.
Evan proves that Rotary isn’t all business! Evan’s message is “Let’s have fun in Rotary” and it’s with this message that has him passionately promoting Rotary’s digital story via his active social media presence.
One of Evan’s great skills is that he uses social media to show that Rotarians are not only making a positive difference in the world, but they are having fun doing it! He presents Rotary in a lighter more personally engaging way, showing the more fun and humorous side to our organisation, He finds it grabs people’s attention, member and non-member alike. This makes the idea of Rotary more relatable, especially to new generations, who may feel disconnected with some of the formalities of Rotary but are avid users of social media.
Evan is also the Digital Media Coordinator for the regional magazine Rotary Down Under as well as keeping himself busy managing his own digital consultancy start up, and building his career as a budding actor amongst many other things.
Rotaract/Rotary Roles • Past member of St Ives Rotaract 1999-2011 • Past President St Ives Rotaract • Past x2 District Rotaract Representative D9685 • Past President Rotary E Club of Greater Sydney • District 9685 Youth Chair 2016- • Member Turramurra Rotary 2011- • Past member RI Rotaract & Interact Committee 2013-2016 • Past Member RI Alumni Committee 2015-2016 • Zone 7b and 8 Australian/NZ representative 2018 Rotary International Toronto Convention promotions committee • Member RI Communications Committee Clint Romesha | Keynote Speaker Clinton Romesha is a former U.S. Army Staff Sergeant noted for his heroic actions during the Battle of Kamdesh, a key moment during the War in Afghanistan. On October 3, 2009, Sergeant Romesha took quick and selfless action while under aggressive fire from the Taliban. Despite taking shrapnel wounds to his neck, shoulders, and arms, he carried out a counterattack that not only eliminated Taliban machine guns, but allowed for wounded soldiers to be taken to an aid station. Throughout the 12-hour battle, Romesha told himself he was merely doing what any solider would have done for his comrades; everyone else, however, saw him as a hero. Romesha’s valor and humility have been widely celebrated. In 2013 he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama, making him the fourth living recipient of the honor for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In the same year, he was inducted into the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes. Since receiving these accolades, Romesha has carried his Medal of Honor with him wherever he goes – not out of pride, but as a constant reminder that within every single person lies the same qualities responsible for Romesha’s own heroic actions. His 2016 memoir, Red Platoon: A True Story of American Valor, was immediately recognized as an instant classic. It is not only admired for providing a clear-eyed account of one of the most crucial battles in recent military history, but also as a powerful account of how one person, committed to doing the right thing, can make a bigger difference than they ever imagined. Romesha revisited the story of the battle that made him a hero in the Netflix original series, Medal of Honor. As a speaker, Romesha not only reminds audiences of the power of ordinary people have for extraordinary bravery, but remains deeply committed to telling the stories of the soldiers who served with him, both living and gone. Romesha forges a connection between his audience and soldiers around the world, telling the stories of those who remain unrecognized, and who continue to make tough, brave choices in the service of others.
Romesha lives with his family in Minot.
